Question: Should we blame Victor Klemperer for not seeking to leave Germany earlier than he did? What factors explain his reluctance to leave, even in the face of rising persecution?


Before the first part of the question can be answered, we should attempt to place ourselves in Victor’s proverbial shoes. If we consider how or what we would think if placed in a similar situation, would we be quick to leave? For example, if our government began to pass laws that were oppressive towards a particular ethnic group, Latinos for example, what would we do? Throughout the years 1933-1935, the Klemperers’ were constantly socializing with their circle of friends. For example, on September 17, 1933 in the afternoon they visited Frau Schaps, said goodbye to the Sebbas and had a party in their home with a large group of their friends. He admits that they were all in despair over the direction they see Germany going but yet they are able to make jokes and laugh. These visits came a little over 5 months after the April 7th boycott of Jewish goods and services and the laws regarding Civil Service and the Legal Profession and the April 25 law to exclude Jews from German schools.
