The battlefield is full of warriors fighting for their lives. They
will never know if they will live through this or any other day. That’s
exactly what happens in Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals. In
this book Melba experiences the integration in Little Rock’s Central High
School during the 1950s.
Warriors Don’t Cry is about a first hand experience in Little Rock,
Arkansas. Nine African-American children were integrated into Central High
School in 1947. It was very difficult for Melba to live through the school
year because people kept on abusing her, including needing a bodyguard at
times.
Melba’s mother and grandma raised her in an African-American

Rock went. Melba was always abused and picked on at
school. Her grandmother told her to be a warrior and not to cry, because
warriors don’t cry.
In the South, people were not treated equally in the 1950s. Jim
Crow laws stated that people were “separate but equal”, but that was not
the case. Finally the government decided that separate was not equal. So
they decided to integrate one of the best schools in the country. That
school happened to be in Little Rock, Arkansas where Melba Pattillo Beals
lived. There, whites hated blacks and blacks hated whites. There were
special restroom, restaurants, and schools for colored and whites. In
the North it was very different, everybody treated each other equally.
When Melba visited the North the summer before she entered Central High
School, she wished that the south would be like the North and she
wouldn’t have to go through the harassment.
