Westward Expansion

Westward Expansion is one of the most important human migrations in all of world history. Not only did it expand the mainland US, but also set the US to become one of the biggest superpowers in the world. When America was first founded, the people had thirteen states for which all of the population lived. However, in the years after the revolutionary war, the people had a bigger incentive to expand out westward to find riches and grow the economy. The first major growth is America’s history was the Louisiana Purchase. A large plot of land in the middle of the US the doubled the size of the US. From there, the wildfire of Westward Expansion only grew.

out west were either free states, such as California, or territories that were far enough North that slavery was unideal of illegal. Even during the civil war, western territories on the northern side of America had no slavery. In addition, it states, “We view this passage across the continent as affording immense advantages to the fur trade...If the government will only aid, even in a very limited manner the enterprise of her citizens , I am fully convinced that we shall shortly derive the benefits of a most lucrative trade...we are anxious to proceed”(Document 1). Therefore, Meriwether Lewis believe the efficient of the fur trade only if the government is trying to convince people to move. In fact, the average price of fur almost doubled around the 1750s to 1760s due to better availability. For example, Fort Albany had its price of fur increase from $70 to about $130 during this time period.
