To What Extent Can Animal Farm Be Considered A Fable

A fable is a form of literature that is generally aimed towards children, includes personified animals and has a moral or life lesson within it. The most common features of fables are animals as main characters, an outdoor setting, a moral, the benefits of following the moral, the downsides of not following the moral, someone who follows the moral and someone who ignores it. The Tortoise and the Hare is clearly a fable, but it's not quite so clear whether Animal Farm truly is one or not. Animal Farm displays some characteristics of a fable, but doesn't quite meet all the criteria.

These animals within Animal Farm show human characteristics, such as arguing with each other, dreaming and using team work and communication to solve problems, and `successfully... [carry out] a rebellion'. Animal Farm quite perfectly follows the fable criterion of having talking, humanized animals as the main characters.

Second off, Animals Farm has a well established outdoors setting. Fables are usually set in outdoors settings, these could be anywhere from in a forest to in the desert. The Tortoise and the Hare is set in a `...forest...' and doesn't change from there, it follows this criterion. Animal Farm's setting certainly fits this description of outdoors, as it's set in `...Manor Farm...', with only a handful of scenes within a house or barn. The criterion of an outdoors setting isn't essential to fables, but it's a common feature between the vast majority of them. The moral is `power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely', as demonstrated in how the pigs quickly gain rule over the farm and become `human-like', the very thing they intended to avoid. There are animals who follow this moral, the pigs gaining power and becoming corrupt, the other farm animals suffering malnutrition and exhaustion as a result of that corruption and animals who don't, the neighbouring farms going about their usual lives, living under the humans.
