united States. In 1861, the southern states seceded, and a war was fought between the rebels and the Union for four long, bloody years. However this battle did not end without a gain, for in 1863 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves.
Even after slavery was lifted from America’s moral back, the movement to reform America continued. Soon after the Civil War, women began to fight for equal rights, and in particular, for enfranchisement. After battling “old guard” politicians as well as common prejudices for many years, women were eventually granted suffrage in 1920 under the 19th amendment.
Another social problem that Americans had to face after the Civil War was the segregation of blacks and minorities. Blacks were treated differently under the law and did not receive fair opportunities. Blacks were forced to attend separate schools and use separate bathrooms.
