This quote from Paule Marshall's article "To Da-Duh, In Memoriam" synthesizes one of the recurring themes throughout the story, contrasts. In this article, Marshall retells the story of when she and her New York family go to visit her grandmother, nicknamed Da-Duh, in Barbados. Throughout this trip, Marshall, as a young girl, is constantly confronted with several contrasts. There are two particularly obvious contrasts in the context of the story. In this description, Marshall creates a vivid imagery for the reader. As simple as Da-Duh's attire and appearance was, it was just as complex. The whiteness and purity of her dress gives the reader a sense of the "good old days" when life was simple and pure, when children played with yo-yo's and bottle caps, and everything just made a little more sense. The black shoes, which clashes with the purity of the dress, then brought us back to the present. A time where the world is filled with chaos and excitement and everyone is hiding behind masks and darkness, hoping not to be seen.
