Who’s For The Game

War is a highly debatable topic and many poets around the time of World War I wrote poems that expressed how they felt about war. Many of the poets had their own idea about war.
In Jessie Pope’s poem, ‘who’s for the game’ she expresses that men should fight in the war to defend their country. Because she came across very patriotic, her idea about that it was right to fight and die for your country was put across strongly in, ‘who’s for the game’. She believed that if you died at war it was a glorious and incredible cause.
People could relate to the poem, as many people also agreed about fighting for the defence of one’s country.

a hand”. This line also questions a person as they read it and makes the reader think. She also feels that war is a show and those who don’t go to war will miss out on the fun of being part of the war.
Pope uses personification in the poem. She says “your country is up to her neck in a fight”. This quote makes the reader imagine a person who has buried themselves in stress and struggle. This makes the reader feel a strong feeling of responsibility. Also she uses the word “your” which also makes the reader feel they have a duty.
She also uses alliteration in her poem. She uses the words “than lie low”. These words also create a guilty atmosphere for those who have not gone to war. Jessie Pope also creates an atmosphere that makes a person consider going to war.
Another technique she used was the use of rhetorical questions, Pope’s use of them, gains the reader’s attention, and really makes them thi8nk about what she Is asking like when she asked;
