Witchcraft In The Crucible


In the Crucible one of the main topics is the one of witchcraft. The book itself is about the accusations Abigail makes saying that people are witches, she does this in order to cover up what she did while dancing. Witchcraft was against the church and was viewed as being an act of the Devil. Witchcraft has many aspects that led to the trials and stereotypes that characterized it.
One of the acts that resulted from being accused of being a witch were a witch trials that occurred in Salem, later to be known as the Salem Witch Trials. admitted to witchcraft, so Abigail had fled Salem and it was known that witchcraft had never taken place in Salem.
From witchcraft came the false accusations from Abigail unto the people who had gone against her, Mary Warren, and the people who had hindered her quest to marry John Proctor. Mary Warren was a girl that was one of the people that had faked seeing birds, feeling cold winds and other things that Abigail had done in order to accuse someone of being a witch. Late in the story Mary Warren tells John Proctor that she and the rest of the girls have faked the presence of witchcraft. John Proctor then tells Mary Warren to testify in court against Abigail so that Goody Proctor will not be hung. While Mary Warren is testifying in court Abigail claims that she sees a bird that is going to harm her. The judges of the court then believe Abigail and put Mary Warren in jail for witchcraft.
