Phillip Marlowe is a detective that is really perceptive. He notices things about people that would elude anybody else. As Marlowe meets women through out Raymond Chandler’s novels The Long Goodbye and The Big Sleep, he notices characteristics about the women almost immediately. At this point in the novel he has realized that she causes nothing but trouble so he will not get involved with her. By the end of the novel Marlowe has realized that Carmen killed Reagan and was mentally unsound. He doesn’t arrest Carmen because of this fact, but tells Vivian to take her to a mental hospital. “Will you take her away? Somewhere far off from here where they can handle her type, where they will keep guns and knives and fancy drinks away from her? Hell, she might even get herself cured, you know. It’s been done” (Big Sleep 228). He knows that she is crazy and needs help, so lets her off.
