A proposal to create a registry for animal abusers was made by the state senate’s majority leader Dean Flores, and the Animal Defense Found in California. The bill, if passed, would be effective state wide and the second of its kind in the country. This bill would follow Suffolk County where state authorities unanimously passed-- IR1879--a measure that establishes an online animal abuser registry. In the past, similar registries have been introduced across the country, but never became law because they were violating individual rights or they simply had a lack of momentum and popularity. I strongly believe that because animal abuse is a crime animal abusers should be fined accordingly to their crime and publically exposed in a legal registry as a measure to prevent potential animal cruelty and other crimes.
The goal of the registry, which would list crimes against both pets and farm animals, is to make it easier for shelters and animal-adoption groups to identify people who shouldn't be allowed access to animals.
