At 18 years old an American citizen can decide to join the military, get married, change their name, purchase tobacco products, vote, adopt a child and much, much more. At 18 said citizen gains nearly every privilege that being a legal adult America entails. However this citizen who can help decide the future leader of their nation or die for their country serving in the military cannot legally buy an alcoholic drink at a bar or strip club. drink in order to appear mature. Also having alcohol illegal for young adults makes alcohol to be seen as a “forbidden fruit”. This is detrimental because of the high amounts curiosity and rebellion towards laws many young adults contain. This curiosity and rebellious tendencies causes many under age people to drink. If drinking were legal to young adults, less people would be inclined to drink to appear cooler or more mature or “to stick it to the man”.
A survey of high school seniors stated that 80% of them have tried alcohol and 62% reported to have been drunk before. Since alcohol is so clearly part of American culture something must be done to educate and supervise this drinking. The inability to drink alcohol in controlled sand supervised settings causes youth to engage in dangerous binge drinking. It is necessary to educate youth on how to drink safely and responsibly.
