1863 was a pivotal year in American history. Many important decisions and events took place, had they not; America today would be quite different.

When Lincoln was elected as president, he had no thought whatsoever of freeing slaves because he said he had no constitutional right to do that. However, he did realize that with slavery in the South, it would make Northern victory harder; the existence of slavery allowed for Southern landowners to leave their fields and fight in the Confederate army. Many ex-slaves from Southern territories and free blacks from the North joined the Union Army. Blacks made up almost 10% of the entire Union army. Black soldiers traditionally served in all black unites with white officers (the heroism of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry can be seen in the movie Glory) Lincoln’s proclamation foreshadowed the ultimate doom of slavery which was legally achieved by action of individual states and by their ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865; 8 months after the Civil War had ended.

The Union had tough times in late 1862 to early 1863 with major defeats at the Battle of Fredericksburg who was lead by General Burnside of the Union (who later yielded his command to Joseph Hooker) and the Battle of Chancellorsville.
