Mental illness is a condition that requires much understanding and compassion for those who are affected by this disease. In the late 1800's people who suffered from mental illnesses were mostly cast out from society, ignored, or left to deal with their illness untreated and alone. Between the end of the ninetieth century and through the mid twentieth century mental illness was discussed more and recognized as a treatable condition. In "The Yellow Wallpaper", which takes place just before the turn of the century, the narrator describes an accelerated decline into psychosis. Her husband, who is also her doctor, brings her to a vacation home in the country to rest after she gives birth to her baby. When she arrives at the home she refers to it as a haunted house and wonders why a house this size would be rented so inexpensively.
