A Rose for Emily is a short story written by William Faulkner to entertain readers with a compelling life account about Emily Grierson. While most readers have questioned Mr. Faulkner's intentions, some claiming it to be symbolic of the battle between the North and the South, Faulkner states that he projected it to be a ghost story. He wanted to reintroduce the concept of a young woman's aspirations of finding romance and starting a family, but also wanted to embellish it further by twisting the plot, illustrating her romantic struggles. suitors for sought after Emily. She is described as "cling[ing] to that which had robbed her, as people will" (149). Faulkner addresses in "The Meaning of A Rose for Emily" that her father was a "selfish man who didn't want her to leave her home because he wanted a housekeeper" (595). This conflicting relationship serves as evidence as an unfortunate relationship with her father and her desire and struggle for love.
The next romantic encounter Emily endures is one with a common man, Homer Barron. The townspeople commented that Emily and Homer were often seen throughout town together, but were suspicious and questioning of the relationship.
