Luther expounds on the concept of justification by faith, as expressed in Paul's letter to the Galatians: "...we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the Law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law." (Galatians 2:16, NRSV)

In explaining the doctrine of justification by faith, Luther takes Paul's statement that Christ "gave Himself for our sins" (Galatians 1:4), and elaborates: "For if our sins can be removed by our own satisfactions, why did the Son of God have to be given for them? But since He was given for them, it follows that we cannot remove them by works of our own." (p. 33) Luther further states that "The main knowledge and true wisdom of Christians is...that Christ was given over to death, not for our righteousness or holiness but for our sins." (p. 35)
