In a society, rules must be made in order to ensure equality, quality of life, and a sense of responsibility. In the professional workplace a code of ethics are those rules and guidelines which set a pre-requisite for all members of that profession. Engineering is for the most part a straightforward job with a mostly straightforward code. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is an engineering organization whose code of ethics promotes acceptable individual moral standing. Even though it is an organization they do have employees and members who follow in the same, or nearly the same field, so thus should give ideas of disciplinary actions if an employee were to break the rules of the code of the ASCE or any other similar company or organization.
"Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest." This cannon described by the ASCE is straightforward in the meaning and clarified ever more in its guidelines, however has no implications as to what could/would, possibly happen if such conflicts were to arise.
