Racial controversies have lived among people for hundreds of years. And in that time Greece, Africa, South America, and the Middle East all have a history of slave labor. Between the 15th and 19th century, the United States began using slaves to build its country; agriculturally and economically. But during the 18th and 19th century, unease about the treatment and ownership of slaves began building tension between white citizens of America. those who fought during the civil war, thus building support for the enfranchisement of African Americans. But in 1896, the Plessy vs. Ferguson ruling destroyed much support for African American integration. Lynching's reached an all-time high in 1892 with 230 recorded deaths and 100 known murders per year. This ruling made segregation legal, after thirty years of attempt to keep public places integrated, nearly coining the term "separate but equal." This allowed any owner of a public place or service to segregate African Americans in any matter they choose while under their establishment. Adding onto the degraded social power of African Americans were Jim crow. Jim crow laws were statutes and ordinances to separate white and black races. Supposedly the treatment was "separate but equal" but in honest terms condemned black citizens to inferior treatment and faculties. This lead on into the mid to late 20[th] century.
