INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the book "Embers," by Sandor Marai. Specifically, it will explain the quote, "a book bound in yellow velvet, with the word 'souvenir' imprinted on the cover," while focusing on meaning, context, and the importance in the work as a whole.

The book bound in yellow velvet is kept in a secret compartment in a desk, along with a gun and some letters. It is quite clear these items are extremely important to the General, and the book is especially important, because he takes it with him. It is sealed with wax, and so the General has not read it, but he seems to know what it contains, ...

be together. The book is sealed because the General never wanted anyone else to know the secret.
The diary plays an important role in the book, because it resurfaces as the General recounts the tale, letting Konrad know he has always known about the plot. The book is a tie to the past, but the book also represents truth, and how the General has always kept the truth a secret, because he wanted to protect a friend who was extremely important to him, and a wife who he loved very much. The book's dying in the fire is representative of Krisztina's own death, and the death of the two men's friendship. The book represents secrets which can haunt even from the grave, and which can hurt others long after the events occurred. The book also represents the ultimate in friendship, because the General has the truth in his hands, and still hangs on to some vestige of friendship to protect the man who he cared about so long ago.
