Animal Farm: Power's Corruption



Power; like in the book 'Animal Farm', by George Orwell; can lead people to greed, discrimination and treachery. Every one has some kind of power over someone or something else. Depending on how it is used it can be good or bad. Like the pigs in 'Animal Farm' for example, they used their power to manipulate and trick their primitive comrades to expand their power over them.
Power can make people greedy. Such as; the pigs of Animal Farm; as soon as they found they were gaining power over the other animals they began to give themselves special privileges and more rations. They wanted more and more control over the other animals so they trained dogs to guard them and attack whoever they ...

The pigs in 'Animal Farm' follow this portrayal perfectly. In the story, they begin to discriminate against the other animals. They show this by establishing the rule that if a pig and another animal meet on a path, the other animal is to move aside and let the pig pass. 'About this time, too, it was laid down as a rule that when a pig and any other animal met on the path, the other animal must stand aside: and also that all pigs…'(116). This is shown in real life too. Such as when the whites had their own stores, restaurants, etc.; and if a black was to enter they would be arrested or abruptly thrown out. Or, when a black and a white were on a bus the black would have to give up hisher seat and stand if the bus was full.
One last thing power influences is treachery. In 'Animal Farm' the pigs show this when Boxer is injured during work and needs serious medical attention, Napoleon; the head honcho of the farm (also a pig); orders him to be sent to the butcher shop since ...
