Barbara Strozzi (1619-77) was a woman to be reckoned with in the early Baroque period. Raised by an aristocratic Italian poet, she was provided with an educational and musical background unlike that of most young females in the seventeenth century. She studied with some of the greatest men in the musical field, who gave her the training that would shape her for the success that was to come. She was unique as a composer in the fact that she published her works in single-composer form rather than in anthologies or collections. Most of Srozzi�s body of work survives and serves as a model of Baroque music containing characteristics typical of the new style.
We know Strozzi primarily through her music for there is not a vast amount of biographical information available on her. What is available demonstrates how even from childhood she was destined for great musical accomplishment. Strozzi was an illegitimate child, born to a servant of a wealthy Italian dramatist and academic, Giulio Strozzi, who was responsible for much of Barbara�s early successes and ultimate career path.
