Overview: The Battle of Midway is considered the most important naval battle in the Pacific for World War Two. It took place in between the 4th and 7th of June 1942, approximately one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea and six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States Navy decisively defeated an Imperial Japanese Navy attack against Midway Atoll, inflicting great damage against the Japanese Fleet.

Prelude to Battle: The Japanese planned a three way attack to capture Midway in early June, plus they would do a simultaneous operation in the North Pacific's Aleutian Islands that could provide a useful strategic distraction. At the front of the assault would be Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo's aircraft carrier force, which would approach from the northwest and repress Midway's defenses and provide a long-range striking power for dealing with the American warships. A few hundred miles behind Nagumo would follow a battleship force under Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto that would contain most of the operation's heavy gun power. Coming in from the West and Southwest, forces under Vice Admiral Nobutake Kondo would actually capture Midway.
