People that have committed extremely loathsome crimes such as murder have been punished by means of the death penalty. It is a practice of age-old standing, but in the United States it has become a very controversial issue. Changing views on this difficult topic led the Supreme Court to abolish capital punishment in 1972 and then bring it back in 1977. Permitting criminals guilty of homicide to walk the streets for reasons such as moral beliefs and cost is immoral. Capital punishment is necessary for a stable society and should not be abolished again.

There is not enough evidence to prove whether capital punishment deters crime. However, a study by W. Bailey of the period from 1967-68 showed a deterrent effect in twenty-seven states. A later study by him showed a deterrent effect in twenty-five states. During the interval on capital punishment in the United States, murder increased by one hundred percent. A review of the fourteen nations who abolished the death penalty showed that the murder rate increased by seven percent from the five-year pre-abolition period to the five-year post-abolition period. Consequently, allowing a murderer to sit in prison is not an adequate means of punishment because of the possible chance for parole. If so, who is to say he would not kill again? If the murderer were sentenced to death the first time he was convicted, innocent lives would be saved.
