Boeing's engineers and mechanics rejected an offer by the administration, and voted towards a collective strike. The strike was favored by 51% of engineers, and 62% technicians. It must be noted that instead of striking union leaders hired a mediator to solve the problem. Union leaders say that the administration is "...simply imposing certain contracts terms and attacking one of the most vital segments of its work force in a short-sighted effort to improve its financial position." Boeing executives on the other hand claim that union officials "... are uncompromising and unrealistic, and have unduly raised members' expectations."
