Women can flick on the TV, look at the news stand, or be flipping through the local newspaper and once again see or hear another article on if having a mammogram at 40 is either good for you or whether you shouldn't have a mammogram. The controversy of having a mammogram at 40 has raged for over 30 years. I have been in the mammography profession for over 11 years and I have seen that early detection of breast cancer saves lives; therefore it is beneficial for women to start their mammograms at 40.

a women, physician, or mammogram has found a lump or other signs and symptoms of possible breast cancer. Next step would be a diagnostic mammogram not a screening. The cancer.org research has shown that in 1,000 screening mammograms only 100 women are recalled for additional evaluation. Out of those 100, 20 will need a biopsy, and 6 to 8 woman will have cancer. The sooner you find the cancer the long-term survival rate is 90-95% greater.

Another component to this debate is, does the mammogram screening cause too many false-positives, therefore causing anxiety and unwarranted biopsies in younger women. To understand this portion of the debate we need to look at possible risks in younger women ages 40 to 49. all 8 women found their cancer early, therefore their survival rate increased and all of my patients are alive and well watching their children grow up. This is all relative to a small rural population where I only perform 450 to 500 mammograms yearly. These 8 women were only diagnosed in the last 2 years. Imagine what I have found over an 11-year period. Granted a lot of those biopsies that were performed over the last 11 years found benign diseases, but the women who were diagnosed with cancer have all come back to give me a hug and thanked me for being a major element in saving their life.
