big money business. Gambling transformed and became more attractive with the induction of the point spread, especially to the mob. The only problem with gambling was that it was game of chance. The way mob increased its chances of winning was by contacting college basketball players to shave points. The mobsters were not asking the players to lose but to simply go under the point spread and if the players complied, they would receive payment.
With the induction of big money came greed, which led to temptation and eventually led to corruption. The players felt like they were being used because people were making money of them and in turn felt like they should be making money out of the deal. Though morally wrong, most of these basketball players were broke and when the opportunity arose to make a little money by shaving a few points it seemed like a reasonable deal for the players with little chances of getting caught.
