“Babies”


Thomas Balmes' documentary, “Babies”, could not have provided a more basic premise for this assignment. He followed four children, born in different areas of the world: Ponijao, from Namibia; Mongolian Bayarjargal; Mari, from Tokyo, Japan; and Hattie, from San Francisco. He recounted the first 12 months of their lives.
The most playful interaction I saw was when Mari was doing baby yoga with her mother. I thought that there could not be a better way to get to know your child as well as to play with her in this type of interaction. The bonding that occurred was very obvious. me was that the mother of the child in Namiba was shaving her head with a very sharp knife I was just thinking to myself that if she missed and cut her or he moved and got hurt, the consequences in the United States would have been quite different. In the United States, the mother may have been reported to Child Protective Services and had her child removed from her care for failure to provide a safe environment. With all of these dangers, I had many thoughts about how they would deal with any accidents that could happen from these dangerous activities. In the United States, these activities are considered unhealthy and dangerous for the children. But in other cultures, it seems to be an aspect of their culture. Here, we would consider the proximity to hospital care. There, a hospital is probably not within a reasonable distance. They would deal with an injury differently in their culture.
