palsy. The first is spastic, which mean they child has stiff muscles and jerky movements. This is the most common type which accounts for 70-80% of cases. Then there is dyskinetic. This type has two subtypes, athetoid and ataxic. Athetiod is uncontrolled movements, and can affect any part of the body including the face, mouth, and tongue. Athetoid accounts for 10-20% of cases. Ataxic affects balance and coordination and sometimes depth perception. This type accounts for 5-10% of the cases. The last type is mixed. This is a combination of types. The most common is spastic and athetoid.
Many children with cerebral palsy have normal or above average intelligence. It may be difficult to express their intelligence because of their inability to communicate. Having cerebral palsy usually doesn’t stop a child from going to school. They just have a bigger challenges that makes things a little harder for them to do.
