The story, "Cinderella," is several hundred years old and is still, according to a 2004 survey, the number one fairy tale today (Cinderella Pp). It embodies a classic folk tale myth-element of unjust oppression and triumphant reward, which received literally hundreds of 'tellings' before modern times (Cinderella Pp). The best-known version of "Cinderella" was written by French author Charles Perrault in 1697, based on a common folk tale earlier recorded by Giambattista Basile as "Cenerentola" in 1634 (Cinderella Pp). of the more general folktale and most often involve princes and princesses, and usually have a happy ending, especially in the modern versions (Cinderella Pp). Within cultures where demons and witches are perceived as real, fairy tales may merge into legendary narratives, whereby the context is perceived by teller and hearers as have been historical actuality (Cinderella Pp).
