The Key Players of the Colorado development in the 1870's. William Jackson Palmer combined the drive of John Evans, the public relations skill of William Byers and the vision of William Gilpin to create a thousand mile railroad, the Denver and Rio Grande.
Gilpin argued that Denver's location in "the trunk line of intense and intelligent energy" would make it a vital link in the cosmopolitan railroad. Denver and Golden also fought for territorial capital, in 1867 Denver won out over Golden because the business men often held their meeting in Denver.
After Union Pacific backed off from Denver Pacific, Denver enters into a deal with Kanas Pacific, a line building west from Kanas City to Denver. Evans managed the line for five years and the funds to finish it, in 1870 the 106 mile Denver Pacific open between Denver and Cheyenne. The Kansas Pacific also reached Denver in August of that same year. In September the Colorado Central extended a 15 mile branch to the Denver Pacific and two years later they reach the mountains as far as Black Hawk. In 1877 the Colorado Central connected with Union Pacific by way of Boulder, Longmont and Fort Collins.
