Dear Ma,

As you now know, I have been journeying to America and joined brother. I have found a job working for a mill and the pay is quite high. I am working in the Boston, Massachusetts. The city is quite busy but pleasant. My boss is very delightful to be around. He is a good boss and a good man. I did not at all want to leave you, but there was no good work in Portugal and we need the money. Leaving was the only option. I miss you so very much though; I worry about you every day and every night. Brother and I hope to get the money for you to come join us very soon.

When I arrived on land, the city was full of so many people. The buildings were humungous and everyone was trying to here and there. I finally found brother and we rejoiced in happiness. He told me that the mill we worked at would be great and it was. The home in Massachusetts we live in is very packed and confined. Brother and I share one bed with another family's child. There is no furniture but there is one small window we can look out of. There are many crimes in the city and I don't like it.

The mill I work in pays very little and barely make ends meat but we manage. The hours are very long and difficult but I get through each day thinking of you. I love and miss you and I know we will meet very soon. I guarantee it. I hope you are well and taking care of ...
