A dramatist has to create an aroma of interest in the reader’s minds, so that the reader does not lose the curiosity to keep on reading. Different genres have different ways of pulling the reader towards the writing. What the writer is trying to express is very delicate, writers have to play around with their text so that the reader does not die of boredom and hangs onto the text until the ending. The climax witch occurs in every story has a way of getting to. The suspense which occurs before the climax the writer indents with great effort to make sure that the audience feels the thrill and excitement, even though in tragedies the audience is aware of the outcome. Suspense is often remarked as a literary device in many interpretations of tragedies, what this means is that for the buildup of interest which every writer wishes to compensate in his writing for his viewers is considered to be an import factor for the development of the play. For the writer to connect one scene to the other, he or she needs to use suspense. If that X factor that a suspense should possess is excluded the importance of the text would be unidentifiable for the reader.
In Jean Anouilh’s “Antigone” suspense is established from the beginning, when Antigone goes on her secret mission, which is to obey the divine law which is to bury her brother. In this tragedy suspense is always encountered around the corner because of the dissident act towards the immoral behavior by Creon, and the contradictory actions which are committed by Antigone.
