Although both were viewed as the 'Exotic East' in the eyes of Westerners, China and Japan took apparently substantially different paths to modernization over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. China was shell-shocked by its relations with the West, and when it became independent, began to look inward politically and economically. Japan was characterized by military, then by economic modernization in a Western, capitalist mode that appeared to embrace Western values. As a result of the U.S. suggested Open Door policy, all of China's colonies were lost. The early half of twentieth century was further characterized by China's devastation by foreign powers, including the 'Rape of Nanking' by Japanese forces. The ultimate outcome was China's turning inward to Maoism. China decided to 'go on its own,' to modernize in a cloistered fashion, relying upon its numbers of people and Mao's communist dogma, rejecting even Soviet influence. Even though this dogma has softened with recent years, and exports and imports to the West have increased, China still remains dependent and inward looking, swiftly quelling any radical calls to greater Western democracy.
In contrast, Japan in the 20th century has seemed interested in assimilating to the West's values. The Japanese consumer is often parodied for his or her willingness to try foreign products, and even the great boom that resulted in the 1980's in Japan was largely fueled by Japanese refinements ...
