Comparing The Yellow Violet and To the Fringed Gentian

The two poems, "The Yellow Violet" and "To the Fringed Gentian" are similar in terms of subject and conclusion. The subject of each poem is a flower. In both poems the speaker speaks directly to the flower in question. At the end of each work, the speaker comes to a conclusion about life. Both flowers also come into bloom during a lonely time of the year, before or after the other flowers bloom. In terms of stature then, both flowers are fairly humble and unobtrusive in the flower family. The speaker for example says to the yellow violet:

" ...slight thy form, and low thy seat,
And earthward bent thy gentle eye,

feature striking natural images to depict the season. The colors and quality of light also serve to depict the season in each poem. In both poems the sun is shining and the sky is blue. Also the time of day in both poems appears to be morning, as suggested by the words "early smile" ("The Yellow Violet", line 22) and "dew" ("To the Fringed Gentian", line 1). These might suggest the hope depicted by each flower, although in terms of different circumstances. The hope offered by the yellow violet is the hope in life of remembering one's roots, and those who may be suffering while someone else is fortunate and successful. The hope offered by the fringed gentian on the other hand is the hope of a new life that can spring forth from death.

The most obvious contrast between the poems is the seasons they depict. The yellow violet is a flower that blooms at the beginning of spring, symbolizing new life and hope. Thus the lesson the poet derives at the end of the poem concerns ...
