Comparisons of influence on coastal waters of Nile and Amazon Rivers

Nile River is the longest river in the world. From Lake Victoria in E central Africa, it flows N through Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile R. and its valley was the cradle of Egyptian civilization. From earliest times agriculture flourished in the desert-surrounded valley between the Nile's periodic floods. Later, dams were built to regulate the flooding.

Heavy rains drench much of the densely forested lowland region throughout the year but especially between January and June. Broad areas traversed by the Amazon are subject to severe floods.
