Descartes says that the proposition "I exist" is certain, because of the theory he uses in the first meditation. If we think we exist, then were thinking period. So even if we think we don't exist, then that proves that were still thinking, therefore we must exist. Russell wants to disagree with Descartes by saying that the "I", as Descartes uses it, stands for the self, but for Russell the self is an object. So Russell is trying to point out that if the self is an object, and objects are always in flux, then there is a possibility that we have a different self for every perception, and if this is true, then the statement "I exist " can not be true, because every time you use the ...

Descartes argument for existing is much more believable, for the simple fact that if we think anything we must exist. I think are minds do have stability. Memory is a proof of the stability of the mind. I think that memory is also proof that there is only one self, because if you have a new self for every new sequence of data it would be impossible to have a memory. If memory is stored in our minds and basically our minds are our selfs, and you had a new self for every new perception or object, then each self would only carry one recollection of data sequence, which would be of that one object, but the next time you saw that object it would be like it was the first time, because the recollection of the object would be contained in a different self that no longer exists.
