Many years ago, the people of Britain were placed into social classes. The social classes they were placed into were based on wealth, income and status. The classes started with: Upper Class, Middle Class and Working Class. The different class groups were always characterised by the individual’s occupation, education, qualifications, wealth and lifestyle. The people that had access to power and influence were better off as they were seen to be highly respected because of their name and wealth. At school children were put into ability groups. This was done to assess which children had the best abilities and which children needed extra help. Putting children into groups again coincides with the class system as it does with society being placed into social classes.

effects on children’s attainment levels; it causes children to fall behind with work in class. Deprivation stems from low family income, deprived neighborhoods and poor health. There are many others factors that affect deprivation but those mentioned are normally the blame for deprivation and low attainment levels.
