In the novel called “Ethan Frome” there are three characters who’s lives can be explained through naturalism. This can be used to explain why each ones life is so doomed and how their surroundings are directly related to their lives.
The first character named Ethan had his life doomed when he married a woman named Zeena and ended up living in “...Starkfield...” (pg.7). His life was doomed because he lived in Starkfield for too many winters and “ most of the smart ones get away” (pg.6). of Ethan’s life since he was young. First “his father got a kick, out haying, and went soft in the brain, and gave away money like Bible texts afore he died.” (pg.13). Then his “...mother got queer and dragged along for years as weak as a baby...” (pg.13). Ethan Frome never had a chance in life to make it better because every possible bad thing happened to him.
The second character named Zeena had her life doomed when she started to take care of Ethan’s Mom when she got sick. After Ethan’s Mom died Zeena married Ethan and lived with him on “...that the sawmill and the arid acres of his farm yielded scarcely enough to keep his household through the winter” (pg.13).
