James Baldwin's essay titled "Notes of a Native Son" describes his personal experience of being African American and focuses on his journey to coming to understand his place in society as an African American. This begins in childhood where Baldwin describes a conflict between himself and his father, while he sees little conflict between himself and white Americans. Baldwin's father is essentially anti-white, including describing "how white people would do anything to keep a Negro down" (56).
