The distinguished Charles Darwin once said, “The observation of expression is by no means easy…” and I agree with Mr. Darwin. Decoding nonverbal messages is not always an easy task, but by examining, some or all of, the communication environment, the communicator’s physical characteristics, and the body movement and position, within a situation, making accurate and insightful interpretations become much easier. may exist for her and her children. In this film review, I will demonstrate my awareness of nonverbal behavior by interpreting the fight scene (1:02-1:09), halfway though the film, between Precious and her mother when Precious gets home from the hospital with her newborn son.
Based off my journals entries, my muted nonverbal analysis slighted differed from my unmuted nonverbal plus verbal analysis of the scene. I based a lot of my perceptions off of Paul Ekman’s theory on the basic expressions of emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. On her way home in the car, Precious is looking out the window and her eyes look out into the distance and then down. Her nonverbal cues express that she is calm, with a straight mouth, yet worried or concerned, when her eyes gaze down. Her slumped shoulders and slow paced walk to her apartment and up the stairs, nonverbally communicate that she is hesitant and possibly not looking forward to what is next inside. Drooping ...
