Figurative language, photographic imagery, anecdotes and symbolism have been entwined into the craft of Gail Jones’ novel Five Bells. These techniques have been constructed into the novel in order to produce a sensory experience which merges the reader’s personal context with the memories, environments, attitudes and cultures of four characters. Thus the novel connects its audience with other times, other people, other places and other ways of thinking.

an appreciation of the World. The burning of books in this context is a method of oppression which the reader may be familiar with through knowledge of censorship. Through Pei Xing’s family and destruction of knowledge Jones has connected the reader with China during the communist revolution.

Jones has utilised juxtaposition to show Ellie’s memories of her father and his gloomy environment. The reader is presented with a photographic description of Ellie’s father’s electrical store; “It seemed silent, sepia and fixed in the wrong time.” The reader is encouraged to picture the electrical store as a remnant of a past time, overgrown by the buzz of a more modern society which has changed and developed. Ellie describes leaving the shop as “stepping from shadows into light”. The juxtaposition of dark to light suggests that Ellie’s father is caught in a place where time is still.
