Chapter 6 of The Prince, "Concerning New Principalities Which Are Acquired by One's Own Arms and Ability" contains numerous references to the importance of freewill and deliberate action in effective leadership. Machiavelli advises would-be leaders to imitate successful rulers, even if "their deeds are yet unable to keep entirely to the ways of others," (Chapter 6).
