The gothic horror novel, Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a power-hungry man who brings about his own destruction through the creation of a monster. While searching for the monster in the arctic, Frankenstein is rescued by Robert Walton, a lonely sea captain on a search for the unknown. Frankenstein then narrates to Walton the story of the monster. Through the novel, Mary Shelley explores the themes of alienation and isolation. These themes are most evident through the characters of Robert Walton, Frankenstein, and the monster.

his “affection for my guest increases every day” and his guest “excites at once my admiration and my pity to an astonishing degree”(Shelley 11). With Walton’s change in attitude, it is clear that he has a need to be close to others and that his isolation causes him great emotional pain and loneliness.
Frankenstein, like Walton, isolated himself from family and friends. Frankenstein spent years learning sciences and studying the creation of life. He became so engaged and involved in his work that he caused himself “to forget those friends who were so many miles absent, and whom I had not seen for so long a time”(Shelley 33). Frankenstein’s work had become his whole life. He “wished as it were, to procrastinate all that related to my feelings of affection until the great object, which swallowed up every habit of my nature, should be completed”(Shelley 33).
