In the excerpt from Douglas's autobiography, he goes into detail about his early childhood as a slave. He mentions that he doesn't know where or when he was born. His mother was a slave also and he talks about her very little involvement in his life. Fredrick Douglas included details of his early childhood for the reader to see the contrasts between the life for white free children at that time and his life.
