Gay marriage has been a controversial topic that has been the subject of debate for years. It is a personal topic for many Americans because it directly affects their lives. Gay men and women struggle to live in a society that recognizes only the marriage between a man and women. It is because of people like author Randy Hicks gay Americans have had to suffer for so many years. I agree these divorce rates are high, I question his credibility about gay divorce rates lowering the countries self-esteem and devastating their country. The only self-esteem that would be lowered would be the gay people, in love, who were denied a marriage license simply because of their sexual preference.
Discrimination hurts everyone involved, especially our young. By denying gays to marry a message is sent to young gay people that they are not equal and do not fit into our society. Young gay individuals end up feeling depressed and helpless because they believe they are outcast. As a result gay teenagers have a higher suicide rate compared to straight teenagers (Dinan, 2012). They suffer with low self-esteem and humiliation because of their sexual preference. It is unacceptable for gays to suffer in America, a nation founded on freedom and liberty for all.
As a nation if we accept gay marriage, we could help thousands of people feel validated. The future of ...
