I would imagine when Dr. Haley-Banez starts the Group Counseling class each semester, she experiences exhilarated anticipation of how each group would possibly develop and which path it would take. The ways groups develop is probably quite diverse because of a multitude of factors affecting each group evolution. According to my classmates that I asked about the first two sessions, during the first session group’s rules and environmental factors were discussed. There are implicit and explicit roles that are essential to state and establish in order to provide for structure and positive interaction in group. Implicit rules are unspoken and known to everyone such as not to interrupt the group leader or a speaker, to turn off the cell phones, to be respectful to one another etc. Explicit norms are the stated rules that add to creating a safe environment during sessions.
