Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Guillain-Barre syndrome, pronounced (gee-YAH-buh-RAY) is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nervous system. This medical condition has a rapid-onset weakness of the limbs as a result of an acute polyneuropathy, a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. This disorder is usually caused by an infection.
Early signs of syndrome include a series of headaches, fever, vomiting, back and lower limb pain. The first symptoms can vary in degree of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. occurs in a few days or weeks after the patient has had symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Occasionally surgery will trigger syndrome. After first clinical manifestations of the disease, the symptoms can progress over a course of hours, days or weeks. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, by the third week most patients are at their weakest. After 2-4 weeks disease progress ends and after 2-4 weeks full functional recovery begins.
There are many common risk factors related with Guillain-Barre Syndrome like HIV, Mononucleosis and Hodgkins disease. Other risk factors are respiratory failure, respiratory muscle paralysis, complete paralysis, permanent muscle weakness, Dysautonomia, permanent numbness, and recurrent attacks of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
