Hamlet’s Insanity vs. Sanity

In Shakepeare’s, Hamlet, the sane Hamlet occassionally switches from the two completely different worlds of sanity and insanity. When insanity tends to put Hamlet at an advantage, he puts on an “antic disposition” (I.V.172), meaning that he puts on an act. On the other hand, when sanity puts Hamlet at an advantage, he switches back to being his logical and clever-self. Hamlet claims that he is “mad north-northwest: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw” (II.II.387). guilt. Hamlet uses his insanity as a weapon, through his words and his actions. Ophelia, Gertrude, and Polonius are all Claudius’ allies, and Hamlet uses his weapon of insanity to the point where Polonius is killed. Before Polonious died, he always believed that Hamlet was insane, which proves that Hamlet’s act was successful. He says, “That he’s mad , ‘tis true ‘tis pitty, And pity ‘tis ‘tis true-a foolish figure”(2.2.92-93). Also, Hamlet tries to torcher Gertrude by laying out her sins right in front of her because she married the king's brother so soon after his death. By wounding Claudius’ allies, he is indirectly harming Claudius, which was one of his short-term goals. Hamlet knows the power of insanity, and he knows how it blurs reality and the truth. Basically, insanity just causes all type of confusion.
