Hills Like White Elephants

In the story “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemmingway, there are many symbols, and they all work together to help create meaning of this story. The symbols that I will discuss are ‘white elephants’ which relates to the hills and the unborn baby, ‘the railroad’ which relates to the relationship that Jig and the American have with each other, and then ‘the baggage’ which relates to the past and how the American don’t want to change, he wants to stay in the past.

is brought up again and this time its in a different way, it is with Jig and how she might be changing her mind on if she wants to keep the baby after all, a quote showing this would be, “They’re lovely hills,” she said. “They don’t really look like white elephants. I just meant the coloring of their skins through the trees…” (pg.211)
The railroad tracks in this story run next to each other, but they never do meet. You could think of this as the relationship that Jig has with the American. A quote showing this is, “on this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun.” (pg.210). This tells us where the rails are located. You can compare this to Jig and the American because they never meet eye to eye with each other, just as the tracks never meet each other also.
