Hills Like White Elephants

In Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”, the male known as “the American” mentally manipulates and dominates the weaker female, Jig. In a sense Hemingway even sets her up by creating characters and putting an environment around her that makes her appear as inferior. The way the story is developed could also be a glimpse into the life of Hemingway and his beliefs.

to smoothly persuade her to do what he wants her to, not what he thinks would be best for her. He directly contradicts himself in the first statement he makes on the matter which shows that he doesn’t even know what he is really talking about. As soon as he makes that statement she looks at the ground and doesn’t respond, so he adds “I know you wouldn’t mind it, Jig. It’s really not anything. It’s just to let the air in” (Hemingway). With no response in sight he then he tries to comfort her by saying “I’ll go with you and I’ll stay with you all the time. They just let the air in and then it’s all perfectly natural” (Hemingway). The two then carry on a conversation back and forth debating the matter. The American assures Jig that they will be happy after she gets it done, and the girl agrees for a moment but then doesn’t.
