History Of Telecommunications


Telecommunication is the transmission of words, sounds, images, or data in the form of electronic or electromagnetic signals or impulses. Transmission media include the telephone, radio, television, microwave, and satellite. Data communication is the fastest growing field of telecommunication. Data communication is the process of transmitting data in digital form by wire or radio.
Telecommunication has been around for many years. Even as far back as 490 BC. Telecommunication in some form or another has always been around. Starting from what is called a Drum Telegraph, to what is now ISDN. Or Integrated Services Digital Network.

drum telegraph which was that of the "Tamtam". This was a big, free hanging, circular metal plate. The keystroking, as it is called, of this plate would create a far-reaching audible tone. This is the drum telegraph and the start of telecommunication.

Fire signaling is another part of the telecommunication family. Also, the old Greece and the
Roman Empire already posses a good organized telegraph system. Fire signaling was sited from mountain to mountain or from tower to tower. Especially sensible was a torch telegraph, which was invented about 2500 years ago. The receiving and transmitting station that was built of two separate walls, which were placed on hilltops. Each one had a place where to set the torch between each station. This is how they communicated at night. It could take as many as 173 torches to send a simple 4 or 5 word message.
